The recent conversations have made me look long and hard at myself. It really is no longer acceptable to just say “well I’m not at all racist” and assume/expect that will be enough. There have been occasions when I – to my shame – have stood by and said nothing. I might have cut those people from my social circle – but that just isn’t enough. Reflecting on it, I have come to realise that it was fear that kept me silent – not physical fear, but the fear of “making a fuss” or being disliked. But how much worse is that fear for people of colour – who encounter this ALL the time? So like you, I’m listening and I will no longer be silent xxx

I think we’ve all been guilty of not speaking out about something (racism, sexism, whatever it might have been) when we should have, but the main thing is to only let it be that once. I kept quiet once, but never have again. People I challenge laugh and say I’m scary, but rather that than weak. Well done for vowing to speak out.

I am with you 100%. I meet up 1,2 or 3 times a week with a bunch of knitty gals and some days there are a few of us, sometimes 14! We all have very different backgrounds and political views. It’s ok though as I have killed the Daily Hate and Brexit subscribers. Seriously though-we have adult discussions about our views. I could never join ANYTHING that banned viewpoints-that really is pandering to some kind of nazi ideal. You go girl-the 34% of the voting population that actually voted to leave can hardly take offence-and if they do, surely that is their problem and not yours.x
