Baa Baa Brighouse has decided that because, like most, we feel unable to influence social, political or economic change in any significant way, it can instead take care of its own very small corner of the world.
In 2019, we launched our monthly limited edition hand dyed charity yarns where £3 of every skein sold went to a chosen charity. Last year we raised in excess of £500 for 16 worthy causes – something we hope to build on in 2020.
Our chosen charity for January will be the Facebook fundraiser launched by comedian, Celeste Barber, in support of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service and Brigades in response to the devastating Australian bushfires currently ravaging the country. We will make donations either via Celeste’s fundraiser or directly to the NSW Rural Fire Service.
We all know people have died, homes and businesses have been burned to the ground and precious wildlife has been pushed to the brink of extinction in these unprecedented fires. So, from one little yarn shop in a nation led by a right-wing government that doesn’t prioritise climate change on one side of the world, to another nation led by a right-wing government that doesn’t prioritise climate change on the other side of the world, Australia we hear you.
This month’s yarn, “Climate Emergency”, comes as a bundle of three mini skeins of 100% Shetland Aran Wool totalling approximately 100g/166m per bundle. The yarn is hand dyed in three shades of variegated greys – one lilac/grey, one blue/grey and one green/grey with speckles of green, red and black.
This is just a suggestion but we thought it would be great to use the yarn to knit mittens for koala bears burned in the bushfires or pouches for orphaned kangaroos and wallabies – whatever knitted items Australian wildlife charities might currently find useful.
£3 of every “Climate Emergency” yarn bundle sold will go towards the brave men and women risking their lives to fight these fires. The yarn will be available exclusively from Baa Baa Brighouse throughout January.
