We Review Little Rowan Cherish by Linda Whaley

Little Rowan Cherish is a delightful collection by Linda Whaley featuring 17 designs for babies aged up to two years. The idea was to create timeless designs for both boys and girls using yarns renowned for their softness and comfort. Cardigans, sweaters, socks, blankets and bootees are all covered in this beautifully presented book which has classic photography courtesy of Jules Mosley. Delicate lace knits such as the Imogen Dress are on offer with beautiful picot edging along with a similar cardigan version called Jessica, perfect for newborns. Cabling also features in several patterns, a technique which once learned is relatively simple but can have some striking effects and adds a wonderful degree of texture. A favourite is the cabled Blanket, ideal as a larger project but taking just eight balls of Rowan Wool...

World Wide Knit in Public Day 2016

Two years ago, we launched Baa Baa Brighouse on World Wide Knit in Public Day with the setting up of a brand new Knit and Natter Group at Rastrick Library, just yards from where our headquarters are. This year, we're joining in the celebration again by hosting another Knit and Natter event. This time, weather permitting, we hope to spill out in to the library gardens so if it looks like the sun might shine, it may be a good idea to bring along a picnic blanket or folding chair. We'll be stringing up the bunting and cranking up the gramophone for some vintage style tunes to set the mood. We will provide refreshments including tea, coffee, juice, cakes and biscuits and there will also be woolly related crafts to keep little ones occupied. Simply bring along your current work in progress or if you have never knitted before, come along...

Mental Health Awareness Week 2016 – Crafting to Cope

If you follow Baa Baa Brighouse on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+ or YouTube, you'll probably be aware that we're big supporters of crafting as a way of coping with mental health problems. We often share stories on our social media networks about the benefits knitting, crochet and other crafts can have on your personal well-being and we're keen to see the stigma attached to mental health removed altogether. Mental Health Awareness Week 2016 runs from May 16 to May 22 and we'd like to take the opportunity to share Elaine's ongoing story with you in the hope that it may offer help and understanding to others who find themselves struggling with their own demons. Elaine Jinks-Turner founded Baa Baa Brighouse in 2014 following a lengthy battle with post-natal depression. The mother-of-three had given birth to her daughter, Florence, in...

Yarn Shop Day 2016

It's less that a week to go until knitters, crocheters, stitchers and sewers everywhere unite to celebrate Yarn Shop Day on April 30th, 2016. Presented by Let's Knit magazine and sponsored by the British Wool Board and The Campaign for Wool, the day was originally a celebration of traditional bricks and mortar yarn shops and provided a valuable opportunity to promote all that is great about British yarn. While Baa Baa Brighouse is an online store, we will be supporting two Yorkshire craft stores in their attempts to celebrate Yarn Shop Day. The Yorkshire Makery in Slaithwaite, Huddersfield, will be stocking our very own hand dyed yarn, Baa Baa Brew, especially for the occasion. The full range will be available to squish, squash and purchase along with boxes of 25g Baa Baa Brew Mini Skein Boxes. Further north in the beautiful historic city of...

Time for a Baa Baa Brew

Yorkshire based online yarn store, Baa Baa Brighouse, has launched its very own brand of hand dyed yarn – Baa Baa Brew. Known as ‘The Brighouse Collection’, the DK yarn is available in six subtle semi-solid colours, each of which is named after an area of Brighouse, the town where it was ‘brewed’ or dyed. They are Rastrick, Woodhouse, Brookfoot, Hove Edge, Clifton and Thornhills. Available in 100g skeins, Baa Baa Brew is a 100% British Bluefaced Leicester yarn which is spun in Yorkshire before being dyed by hand in Brighouse using traditional, small scale methods. During the dyeing process, each skein is immersed in its own dye bath and left unagitated, allowing the dye to absorb naturally which results in subtle variations in colour. The yarn is then air dried, wound, re-skeined and tied by hand before a Baa Baa Brighouse...

A Grand Day Out!

On a dull, grey October morning in Yorkshire, Baa Baa Brighouse, consisting of Gary and Elaine, waited for their day trippers to arrive - they were off on a grand day out to Farfield Mill in Sedbergh. It was the first Autumn Trip they had organised and the party was made up of a small group of ladies, some of whom they had met at past events, such as the British Wool Show in Harrogate last year, Armley Mills Wool Festival in Leeds, Crafternoon Tea at Holdsworth House Hotel on the outskirts of Halifax or at bi-monthly and monthly Knit and Natter sessions at Rastrick Library and more recently, at LoveBread in Brighouse. One or two faces were new. None of the group had been to Farfield Mill before, so were looking forward to learning about it's history and viewing the work of a whole host of crafters and artists in its retail galleries and...
